It is located in Guruvayur, Thrissur district. Devotees in large numbers flow to Lord Krishna from all over India. Devotees envision the Bhagavat Chaitanya in the form of Unnikrishnan. The temple is dedicated to the East, The idol of Guruvayurappan is made. It is made of the very important rock known as 'Pathala sila'. This is the idol of Lord Mahavishnu worshiped in Vaikuntam. Hence, Guruvayur is known as Vaikuntam on earth.

Goddess Guru Brihaspati and Vayu bhagavan sought the right place to place the idol, and finally reached the Rudra Theertha where Lord Shiva performed the penance. Lord Shiva understood the purpose of their arrival and said that this is the place where you seek the highest Rudra Theertha. The idol was placed with Guru and vayu as per Lord Shiva's direction. According to legends, Lord Shiva went to Mammiyur, the other side of Rudra Theerthakara, saying that the place would be named after the guru and the vayu.The dedication took place on the Poyaam day of Kumbham. It is believed that after the dedication of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishwakarma built the temple as per the directions of the Guru and the vayu bhagavan.

The temple was renovated in 1838. It was the reign of Tippu. The temple was ruled by Ullattu Panicker, a loyalist of the Samoothiri at the time. In 1900, the British handed over the duties to Konthi Menon. In 1930, the Madras High Court approved the appointment of Mallissery and Samoothiri as trustees of the temple. Low caste community people forbidden to enter the temple at that time.

In 1931, the Satyagraha was led by Kelappaji. He demanded that all be admitted to the temple. The temple was enacted in 1947 through the Freedom of Access Act. Near the temple is a large spacious temple pond. The pool is said to have been known in the ancient times as the Rudratheerthakara. It is perfect to Darsanam, after bathe in the rudra Theertha. Once the Sreekovil is closed, there will be an offering of Krishnanattam on all days except Tuesdays. Krishnanattam is known as an effective offering for the good fortune of marriage, to get goodness kids and happy married life.Krishnanattam is an art form which Kannan likes very much. It is believed that Kannan will be one of the spectators once the program starts. Other important offerings include bhajanam, Archana,Alankaram, Sayanapradakshinam, Abhishekam, Chorunu, Marriage, prasada oott, Anayoot and Tulabharam. Prasada oott is being held at Ootpura from 10am. Krishna's favorite flowers are jasmine and Thulsi. The jasmine girls reminisce about Kannan's gopikas.

The rituals of the temple are as follows. The sreekovil will open at 3 p.m. Until 3.10 is a Darsanam. At 3.10 pm there will be Thailabhishekam, Vakacharth and Sagkhabhishekam. At 3.45 pm Malar nivedyam, Mukhalankaram At 4.15 am Ushanivedyam at 5.10 is the Darsanam, after that Ethirettu Pooja and then Ushapooja. Darshan and Shiveli at 6.15 pm. At 7.30 pm there will be Palabhishekam, Navakabishekam, Pantheeradi Nivedyam and pooja. The Sreekovil will close at 12:30 pm and will open at 4.30pm. Shiveli and Darshan till 6.15. Deeparadhana at 6.15 pm. At 6.15 pm, the Darshanam, Darshanam and Athazha Pooja will be held at 8.30pm, Athazha Sheeveli at 9.30pm, Thripukka and Olavayana at 9.30pm.

The Guruvayoor Ekadashi is celebrated as the Ekadasi in the Pournnami of the vrischikam month. Some of the festivals celebrated here are the Chembai Music Festival, Gajarajan Commemoration, Ashtami Rohini of Chingam, Vishukkani and Nirupathari.

The festival is celebrated at the Pooyam star of the month Kumbham. This is the 10th day of the festival. Children below the age of 5 are not allowed inside the temple after the festival. On the first day of the festival, elephant rides will take place in the afternoon. Elephants will stop more than 20 elephants. The elephants will be placed in front of the Manjulal on the eastern side of the temple. At precisely three o'clock in the temple, the elephants start to run and enter the sreekovil. Until this elephant festival is over, the winner of race get a fortune life till end of the festival.

Otturuliyum Kunnikkuruvum - legend
There is a big otturuli and full of rosary pea found inside the Nambalam. Have a legend about the rosary peas.There was an elderly devotee bathing in the Guruvayur temple pond daily. There was always something to handled when he saw Kannan. One day when he went to visit Kannan, he had nothing to offer. When they were very worried about it, they saw the tree of a rosary pea. Kannan can be taken to the rosary pea to play with the child. And reached the temple with it. But in a hurry, all the rosary peas in her hand went away. Worried that it could not be given to Kannan, a little boy came and gathered all the pebbles and placed them in a bowl and gave them to the elderly devotee. The devotee revealed that boy was Kannan.To commemorate the devotee, still carries a otturuli full of rosary peas inside the Nambalam. It is believed that the infants' climbing of the rosary peas will increase their naughtiness and intelligence.

In the eastern side of the temple there is a banyan tree called Manjulal. This tree is in remembrance of the presence of Lord Guruvayurappan who is a devotee of Guruvayurappan.
Here is the legend about Manjulal. There was a poor girl who was a devotee of Lord Krishna called Manjula. Daily sight at Guruvayur Temple It was customary to walk and tie the tulsimala. When she was a child, Kannan had a flower in her hand when she visited the temple with her mother. One day Mother was not well and she was late to the temple after completing all her domestic duties.Upon reaching the temple, the temple were closed.She began to burst into tears as she was unable to decorate Tulsimala Kannan. Seeing this, the devotee Poonthanam thirumeni inquired about the matter. Manjula informed the matter that she was worried about Kannan being unable to give Tulasimala. Upon hearing this, Poonthanam comforted Manjula and told him to go to the banyan tree floor of Tulsimala with full faith and devotion. He sent her home.Started the next day Thirumeni began preparing Kannan for Nirmalyam. He started taking all the garlands that had been worn around his neck. But even if all the garlands were taken away, there was still one tulsimala left. The thirumeni was in great trouble. He asked Kannan whether he had done anything wrong. It was then that Poonthanam Thirumeni was informed that Thulasimala had placed it in the Manjula banyan tree on the previous day.Realizing this,thirumeni who ran to banyan tree and took away the Tulsimala. The tulasimala in Kannan's neck also disappeared in real time. The banyan tree is called Manjulal, in memory of the girl who is a devotee of Kannan.

Guruvayurappan's elephants are kept in the Punnathoor fort, about three kilometers from the temple, under the rule of the Samoothiri and offered by the devotees as a gift. The elephants of Guruvayur Keshavan and Guruvayur Padmanabhan are well known.Guruvayur Padmanabhan is no more.
